Wake Forest junior Elena Singer-Freeman and sophomore Cassandra Hung have been named 2024 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars. The two are among 438 college students from across the U.S. to receive the award for the 2024-25 academic year. Award winners are selected based on academic merit from a pool of more than 5,000 sophomores and juniors studying natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Professor Michael Rizzo has inspired undergraduate Emily Jones’ passion within the Department of Biology.
After taking his Introduction to Biology course, Emily enrolled in Professor Rizzo’s upper-level Cell and Molecular Biology class. Dr. Rizzo is a neuroscientist and shares cutting-edge information from the field, including molecular cloning, mass spectroscopy and CRISPR.
Understanding these techniques encourages Emily’s interests in biology by helping her appreciate their real-world use.
Additionally, Emily had the privilege of joining a biology research lab, where Professor Rizzo served as advisor. Emily has now joined the PCR and Gel Electrophoresis project, studying genetic material.
During their weekly meetings, Dr. Rizzo is always sure to check in on his students. He asks them about what is going on in their lives and other courses. It is just one more example of how Wake Forest offers a superior academic experience – and one that is personalized, warm and welcoming.

Spanish professor Dr. Sara Fernández Cuenca has influenced the undergraduate research of so many Wake Forest students.
Anna Attal is one of them.
Anna conducts research through a Wake Forest URECA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities) grant with Dr. Cuenca. Their research centers on the WFU study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain.
Dr. Cuenca and Anna measure changes in students’ overall Spanish proficiency after one semester studying abroad. They conduct interviews with second-language learners of Spanish at the beginning and end of the semester – to measure changes in accuracy, fluency and complexity.
Anna is profoundly grateful for the research experience. She didn’t think it would be possible for her since she is in a non-STEM field. Attending an institution that encourages undergraduate research across disciplines has been ineffably enriching.

Congratulations to Kendra Graham (‘85), Mit Shah (‘91), our 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients.
Each year the Wake Forest University Alumni Association presents awards to alumni whose achievements and recognition have reflected honor on their alma mater. There are several criteria for selection: alumnus/alumna who embodies the values and core principles of the University and has demonstrated extraordinary service to the University, their field, humanity, or society.
Kendra Graham (‘85) 🎩
For over 30 years, Kendra Graham’s vast knowledge of golf and her natural ability to communicate the rules to players have led to some impressive “firsts” for women. Among those groundbreaking achievements, Kendra was the first female rules official at the Masters Tournament and the first American woman to officiate the R&A Open Championship (a.k.a. The British Open). She has served as a key official in more than 50 majors – men’s and women’s – as well as notable amateur events. A member of the USGA’s Executive Committee for six years, Kendra was chair of the Rules of Golf Committee and co-chair of the Joint Rules of Golf Committee with her counterpart from the R&A. In that capacity, she became a principal decision-maker in the January 2023 revisions to the official Rules of Golf.
Mit Shah (‘91) 🎩
Mit Shah, who is a trailblazer in the nation’s hospitality industry, is celebrated at Wake Forest for his generous and enthusiastic support of the basketball program. In 1993, just two years after graduation, Mit became founder and CEO of Noble Investments, an Atlanta-based real estate management company with more than $6 billion in hotel investments over 30 years. His passion for supporting the Wake Forest student experience inspired a transformational gift in 2017 to create the Shah Basketball Complex and distinguished Mit as the youngest alumnus to give at that level. He made a subsequent multi-million-dollar gift in 2023, which already is enriching the home court atmosphere. Mit is a five-term member of the Board of Trustees and chair of its investment committee.

And that is precisely what undergraduate student Anusha Vora has found at Wake Forest University.
As an undergraduate, she is a research assistant, working on diabetes research at @wakeforestmed.
She has even been published as an author of a scientific abstract. It is rare for undergraduate students to receive acknowledgment on a paper of this significance, but at Wake Forest, Anusha is also actively participating in this advanced medical research.
