COREN Moves to Elevate Nigeria’s Engineering Standards

COREN unveils wide-ranging reforms

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has unveiled wide-ranging reforms designed to tighten supervision of engineering education and professional practice across the country, while positioning Nigeria’s standards within globally accepted accreditation systems.

During its first council session of 2026, the regulatory body resolved to begin the process of attaining provisional membership of the Sydney and Dublin Accords, alongside pursuing full signatory status to the Washington Accord. The initiative, to be undertaken in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), is expected to improve the international portability, credibility, and competitiveness of Nigerian engineering qualifications.

As part of the reform package, COREN also approved proposed amendments to its enabling legislation aimed at strengthening compliance mechanisms, enhancing consumer protection, and promoting greater transparency in professional regulation. Additionally, the council restructured its accreditation framework by setting up dedicated units to ensure institutions and training programs meet evolving international benchmarks.
