COREN SEEKS TO JOIN SYDNEY AND DUBLIN ACCORDS

COREN Holds Workshop to Support Accord Participation

Nigeria has taken a significant step toward securing global recognition for its engineering qualifications as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), in partnership with the Nigeria National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), held a one-day workshop in October to support COREN’s planned application to the Sydney and Dublin Accords. The workshop aimed to familiarize participants with the requirements, procedures, and timelines for joining the accords, which provide international benchmarks for engineering technologist and technician education.

COREN President Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar urged stakeholders to work together to secure Nigeria’s full membership, emphasizing how this would strengthen the credibility of engineering qualifications and broaden global opportunities for those holding Nigerian degrees. In 2023 COREN became a provisional member of the Washington Accord. But NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, emphasized the importance of participation in the Sydney and Dublin accords for Nigeria’s technical and vocational education sector. “It’s not enough to have national accreditation by the NUC and NBTE. More important is that there should be an international benchmark, and that is what the three accords are all about,” he explained.

The Dublin Accord is an agreement for the international recognition of engineering technician qualifications. The Sidney Accord recognizes the equivalency of degrees for engineering technologists or incorporated engineers in the signatory countries.
