Engineers Canada Celebrates 60 Years of Engineering Accreditation

Engineers Canada Celebrates Milestone

2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Since its creation in 1965 by Engineers Canada, the CEAB has been a key part of the national system that reviews and accredits undergraduate engineering programs across the country and beyond. The CEAB operates as a committee of Engineers Canada, which represents the engineering regulators in each province and territory. Its work is carried out by volunteers who conduct program visits, assess compliance with accreditation criteria, and make recommendations to the CEAB for final decisions.

Over the past six decades, the CEAB’s role has evolved in response to changes in technology, education, and the profession. The organization continues to review and update its criteria to reflect developments in areas such as digital systems, sustainability, and interdisciplinary practice. It also participates in international initiatives through the Washington Accord, which strives to recognize the substantial equivalence of accredited engineering programs in member jurisdictions worldwide.

To mark its 60th year, Engineers Canada has produced a commemorative video featuring interviews with past and current CEAB members, accreditation volunteers, educators, and representatives from the regulatory community. The short video offers insights into the impact of engineering program accreditation on various stakeholders, highlights key moments in the CEAB’s history, share the perspectives of those who have contributed to its work.

The milestone was acknowledged at the CEAB’s September 2025 meeting, where members viewed the anniversary video and reflected on the organization’s history. The event also provided an opportunity to discuss the future of accreditation within Canada, including ongoing modernization efforts under Engineers Canada’s Futures of Engineering Accreditation Project.
